In the heart of Franeker lies a unique piece of history: the world’s oldest still-operating mechanical planetarium. Between 1774 and 1781, wool comber Eise Eisinga built this impressive solar system into the ceiling of his living room.
Using an ingenious gear mechanism, the planetarium displays the current positions of the sun, earth, moon, and the five planets known at that time. Thanks to Eisinga’s craftsmanship and precise maintenance instructions, this masterpiece continues to run flawlessly after more than two centuries. A fascinating glimpse into the universe, right in Friesland!
